SUMMERLAND, BRITISH COLUMBIA / RankWire.AI / – More than 20,000 people left communities around Okanagan Lake as the Bald Range wildfire intensified in southern British Columbia. The fast-moving fire forced evacuations in Summerland, Peachland and nearby rural areas over the weekend. Flames destroyed homes and damaged other property as the fire spread across more than 10,300 hectares. Provincial authorities declared a state of emergency as crews worked to protect communities and move residents from threatened areas.

The wildfire began Friday evening and expanded quickly as strong winds pushed flames toward populated areas west of Okanagan Lake. Summerland, home to about 12,000 people, faced a full evacuation order. Thousands more residents left areas around Peachland and neighboring districts. Orders also covered Faulder, Penticton Indian Band lands and parts of the Okanagan-Similkameen and Central Okanagan regional districts. Officials placed additional properties under evacuation alerts as conditions remained dangerous.

BC Wildfire Service crews faced heavy smoke, poor visibility and turbulent conditions during the response. Ten helicopters and a night-vision helicopter supported firefighting and evacuation operations. Crews also worked on containment lines and structure protection near Summerland. Firefighters from Mexico, Australia and New Zealand joined Canadian personnel already deployed across the province. Authorities said the fire showed limited additional growth on Sunday, although hot and dry weather continued across the region.

    Emergency operations expand across Okanagan

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police reported one death connected to the emergency. An 80-year-old Meadow Valley resident died suddenly while leaving her home with a family member. She had been evacuating because of the wildfire. The BC Coroners Service began reviewing the circumstances surrounding her death. Firefighting helicopters also helped rescue more than 50 people who became trapped or isolated as flames moved through the area. Officials reported no other fatalities at that stage.

British Columbia’s emergency declaration gave provincial authorities added powers to support evacuations, travel controls and temporary accommodation. Highway 97 closures disrupted movement between communities along Okanagan Lake. Officials also warned people not to use forest service roads in affected areas. Emergency support centres opened in Penticton and West Kelowna for displaced residents. Local authorities asked evacuees to register for assistance and follow official instructions as crews assessed damage where access became safe.

    Federal assistance backs wildfire response

The federal government approved British Columbia’s request for emergency assistance as thousands remained away from their homes. Public Safety Canada coordinated federal support with provincial authorities through the Government Operations Centre. Assistance included shelter and accommodation for residents displaced by the wildfire. Provincial officials said immediate lodging resources remained available during the weekend. They also encouraged evacuees who could stay with relatives or friends to use those options while emergency teams continued arranging temporary housing.

The Bald Range wildfire remained the main focus of the South Okanagan emergency as crews monitored fire behavior and weather conditions. Authorities continued investigating the cause. More than 100 wildfires burned across British Columbia during the weekend, with many classified as out of control. The province had already brought in international crews before the Bald Range fire expanded. Officials told residents under evacuation orders to leave immediately and urged those under alerts to prepare for rapid departure.
